Straight and sleek – no more! Inspired by the locks of Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce, everyone is after that luscious shine and flirtatious bounce. Ladies, curls are back in.

From a straightener to an ionizing treatment – and everything in between – for years, South Asian women have strived to achieve silky, straight hair. However, as trends are taking a twist back in time, the retro prints and urban folklore are seeping into the latest fashion. The ‘low maintenance’ and ‘easygoing’ appeal reigns over today’s hottest looks. A mis-matched outfit, some lip gloss, and loose curls set with a light spray, and you’re good to go.

The trick? Well, South Asian hair tends to be coarse and somewhat brittle, prone to frizz and fly-aways. Adding volume or curls would inevitably spell d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r! With some tips from hair specialist Frozan Mirzahi from Aura Hair Design, that glamorous look is not only attainable, but yours to maintain and enjoy at the ease of your very own fingertips. -Use a deep conditioner for a silky, soft look on curls -After washing hair, do not blow dry completely, as hair styles better while slightly damp -Use a mist of setting spray on sections of dry hair before rolling -Use medium to large Velcro curlers and set for 45 min- 1 hour. -Blow dry hair once in curlers to set the style -As many assume, it is NOT necessary to sleep in curlers. Once hair is fully dried after 45min, it is set. -After curlers are taken out, set with fingers while using a defining cream so curls are maintained and hair does not frizz -Velcro curlers will work on straightened hair, just exaggerate the process with more spray, a longer time frame, and more blow drying -This style can last on hair unwashed up to 3 days -This effect works best on longer hair with layers to give added lift

Compared to last year, Frozan mentions that “over 50% of clients are asking for that big-sexy-hair look… More layers, more volume, and body is the preference these days.”
